Ansteorran Award Recommendations and How to Submit Them

The Crown needs your help! Our Crown can’t be everywhere all the time, so they depend on us to tell them when we see people around us who deserve recognition. And, while the form, itself, is easy to fill out, knowing what information to include can be kind of daunting. This class is designed to help you understand what the Crown needs to know and how to get it to them so that deserving people can be recognized.
The Ansteorran Wiki

Did you know Ansteorra has a Wiki? No? This class will teach you everything you might want to know about the Wiki- What is it? How can you contribute, what to do, what not to do, and what permission forms are needed before you do it! It will also provide opportunities for folks to have a wiki page built for them: If you’d like to have a page built, please bring a photo of yourself (and your registered device if available). Grab and go packets are also available in the class, and throughout the day. Age limit is 18.
Armored Fighting Basics
Angus Gunn
Sir Angus will be teaching several classes and holding several discussions throughout the day. We will work on the techniques, mentality and attitudes of chivalric fighting both on and off the field. There will be footwork, sword work, practice techniques as well as open form discussions on topics related to the chivalric arts. Bring your armor and if time and space allow there may be pickup fights or some more in-depth discussions and walk throughs of some of the techniques discussed. This class will primarily concentrate on sword and shield fighting. The open discussion may also include some discussion of melee fighting and other weapon fighting.

The Art of Being Judged

Regarding A&S competitions here in Ansteorra, artisans are frequently taught how to set up their display, how to write their documentation, and how to do better research. What we are not taught is how to go through the judging process with positive results. Being judged can be emotionally charged, and physically stressful. This class will address potential fears and triggers, and give the competitor the tools needed to enjoy judged competitions.

Would you like to network with your fellow artisans and scientists? Geek out with others who share your passion? Or maybe seek out a laurel who specializes in a topic you’re interested in, but don’t know who to contact?

If so, please join us for the Artisans & Advocates Agora!

The laurels are hosting a meet and greet to facilitate getting to know each other in an informal setting, and help artisans connect with people who can help them in whatever they are interested in.

To help attendees quickly identify who they might like to talk to, laurels will be wearing color coded felt leaves in their specialties.

Basic Tablet Weaving

Learn to warp your loom and weave a basic pattern. Please bring a loom (inkle or other small portable type) plus 12 tablets plus 2 colors spools/skeins/balls of string, scissors and a shuttle. If you do not have a shuttle bring a toilet paper tube or old credit card. I will plan to find an open social area to be available in the morning to help students pre-warp their looms if they want. Church History for Persona Building Part 1

This is part 1 of a two part class covering things happening in the Christian Church during the period of the SCA. Part 1 covers items from 600 to 1100 AD. Focus will be given to time periods that match attendees personas. To build a persona, you not only need to select a geographic area, a time frame and an ethnic background, you also need to be aware of what is happening during that time around our persona and the church was an integral part of that through the SCA period.

Demystifying the Laurelate

Topics will include: the job description of a Laurel, judging and feedback, common qualities looked for in Laurel candidates, mentorship, and a Q&A to address participant questions. The goal is to give information to help artisans in their personal journeys.
Dutch Oven & Cast Iron Camp Cooking

Class will include a brief history of cast iron cookware, a hands on demo of a couple of Dutch Oven recipes, necessary equipment to dutch oven and cast iron cook. Also covered will be the care of cast iron, and some general camp cooking recipes. Participants will get to try the demos and will receive handouts covering the class as well as additional recipes. Forging Demonstration

Demonstration of basic forging techniques and methods. This will be a come and go as you desire as I will be showing basic forging techniques and processes and forge care throughout the day. I will demonstrate several skills used to create tools, weapons, and other items made of hand worked steel. Some limited opportunity to do some hammering for participants will likely be available.
The game of Love for Fun and Profit

The Medieval Game of Love for fun and profit. From the time of the troubadours onward, nobles and the gentry played a social game of love to demonstrate their gentility. Singing, fortune tellings, reading, dancing, conversing wittily, riding horses, poetry writing, playing games of chance/skill/prowess, hunting, going a maying–These are rolled together into the game of love. In this class we will look some period examples of how this social game was played then, and how we still play it now. We’ll also look at the financial “stakes” the game had in real life, and the pragmatics of marriage, money, and property in 15th century England. If you’ve always wondered: How can a younger son hope to win a wife? If my gentry parents have sons and daughters, which of us can get married? Why did Sir Sickly marry off his 10 year old son? Should I swear fealty to the leaf or the flower? Is there anything I can do if my twenty something daughter runs off and marries the estate’s bailiff without permission? What is the absolute minimum I need to pack to go court a woman and impress her parents? THEN THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU!

Hearing the Language of Plants

In herbalism, the plants themselves hold keys that tell us how we can use them. This class will cover specific ways that plants signal their uses to us, through taste, smell, and more. You will learn safety considerations, the basics of constitutional medicine; and which categories of plants speak to us of poisons, which ones move energy, which are likely to soothe, and more–without looking them up in a book. Participants will sample herbal preparations to illustrate the information. This class is especially geared toward herbalists and brewers. Age limit is 12 years old.

Prick & Pounce: Embroidery Design Transfer

Rapier Marshaling 101

This class will serve to educate you on becoming a rapier field marshal. You will learn about armour and weapon requirements/limitation and field management. By the end of the class, you should know how to inspect equipment and run a list field. Applications will be available should I deem anyone ready for authorization. Romani Persona Building

Join me at Winterkingdom for a discussion on how to accurately play a Romani person in the SCA. The class will cover basic persona building details in regards to Romani specific personas: time periods, locations, naming practices, garb and a brief bit on Romani specific charges that could be incorporated into one’s heraldry. This will also be an opportunity for consulting heralds and those dedicated to helping newcomers build personas to familiarize themselves with the Romani in period and how to turn that history into a period appropriate Romani persona. I will bring a packet for everyone that includes everything I cover in the class including a timeline of the Romani throughout the SCA period and images of Romani in period for garb references. I always bring sweets and treats to my classes. Yes, I am shamelessly bribing you to join me for a class that I am deeply passionate about and bears great importance to historical accuracy and how Romani personas are viewed and accepted in Ansteorra.

This is our time to get the things we would like to achieve in the SCA actually carried out, and if that’s the kinda thing you’re ready for and interested in, then join us. Share any ideas you may have and give your input on already existing ideas. We the teens need to express what we want or it’ll never get done. And we have snacks.

Ever wonder what you might look like in a particular style of Tudor headwear? Wish you could try on period headwear before investing material and time? Attending this class might assist you with determining your look. Mock ups of both men and women’s headwear will be available. Styles have mainly been adapted from The Tudor Tailor, The King’s Servant, and The Queen’s Servant. Patterns will also be available for tracing so that you may leave with a copy of your chosen style. Beginning of the class will be a short lecture and mini headwear fashion show. Remaining class time will be spent trying on mock ups, pattern tracing, and open discussion
