Unto the bards of the land are sent greetings and this invitation to participate in the competition for Title Bard of Northkeep at Castellan XXXI!

Whereas their Excellencies like their bards to be versatile and adroit, the competition shall proceed in the following manner:

  • Round 1 – Bring Your Best – This may be a song, story, poem, or instrumental.
  • Round 2 – Spoken Word – You will read or recite a poem or story.  Proviso – You may not use the same format as you did in Round 1.  If you favored your audience with a poem, you must now provide a story and vice versa.
  • Round 3 – Challenge Round – Their Excellencies shall provide a theme for the finalists, which they shall use to create an original piece in the format of their choosing.  The finalists shall have one hour to complete said pieces.

JUDGING

Whereas the plague has limited the number of attendees to the event, the competitors shall judge each other’s performances using a ranked judging system.  Points shall be awarded based on this system and the finalists for the Challenge Round shall be the top three-point winners.

The competition shall begin at 9:30 o’clock in the morning and shall continue until the rounds are completed.

There will be a brief break between rounds and the challenge will be given at 2 o’clock in the afternoon and the performances at 3 o’clock.

Their Excellencies shall announce the new Title Bard of Northkeep during Court that evening.

Come revel in the beauty and talent of our dancers as they vie to become the next Champion of Middle Eastern Dance!

The rules of Entry for Kingdom Middle Eastern Dance Competition:

  • Each dancer will perform two pieces.
  • The first piece is limited to 5 minutes and can be choreographed or improvised. Please note that documentation is encouraged, but not required.
  • This year we will be using ‘canned’ music. Recorded music must be appropriate for the period-style piece that is being performed.
    • In the past we have used Bluetooth to connect to the speakers or a direct connection from the dancer’s phone – please plan accordingly.
  • The second piece will be an improv piece and danced to an unknown song and/or style of music. The reason for this is a Kingdom Champion has to be able to perform at the need of the Crown. This piece will be limited to 2 to 3 minutes.

The competition will be judged according to the Middle Eastern Dance form found here: https://ansteorra.org/artsandsciences/forms/
