September ~ Guild of the Month

Greetings Bryn Gwlad and Friends, Today we introduce you to The Bryn Gwlad Fiber Arts Guild ~ The purpose is to Highlight the guild and its leader and show what it is all about.

The Bryn Gwlad Fiber Arts Guild lead is Master Dafydd de Mortemer

The Fiber Arts Guild is set up and run by populace from the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, for the Barony and its friends. It is a resource for beginning and continued help in all areas of Fiber Arts in the medieval time frame of the SCA ~ from around 400AD to 1600AD. It is a place to ask questions and receive help or ideas for all. Wether you are a Newcomer or seasoned old timer, there is always information and help for the asking.

I am very excited to be able to ask a few questions of Master Dafydd to see how they personally feel about the things they offer and share with the populace. Dafydd is extremely knowledgeable and talented in this area of fibers Arts as well as in woodworking !

Q ~ 1. How long have you been the lead for this Guild and why did you volunteer for this?

A ~ Dafydd – I have been lead for this guild for at least 4 years.  It had been dormant for a while and I wanted to try to restart it.  Then the Plague happened.  While the guild itself has not been doing much as a group, members of the populace are always working on something.

Q ~ 2. What kind of things do you think the Barony can gain from attending/joining this guild?

A ~ Dafydd – The fiber arts encompasses so many different skills.  Many people already have one or more skills and would find it very easy to pick up new ones.  Everyone is happy to share their knowledge and help out whether you are just getting started or have been working on something and want to expand your skills.

Q ~ 3. Do you need to have any previous experience to be able to join in and get something from this guild?

A ~ Dafydd – No prior experience is needed but because there are so many skills most people find they do have some experience already.  Some skills are very easy to pick up and don’t require a lot of investment while others require more investment in time and money.  Each person will be able to find something that fits their abilities and most do not require much physical effort.

Q ~ 4. What would you like to say / tell people to encourage them to join in ?

A ~ Dafydd -The fiber arts are probably the oldest skills developed by humans. It may predate stone tools.  It is universal and is useful for almost anything you do from the practical to purely decorative.

Q ~ 5. What do you have planned for the future?
        a. 1 month – In the short term we are still fairly restricted by the plague.
        b. 6 month – I would like to get a class together to teach and share knowledge of spinning.
C. 1 year – unknown

Q ~ 6. Anything else you would like to add or say to the populace ?

Everyone keep working on your projects at home and sharing your progress.  Times will get better and soon we will be able to get together again.
