Greetings Bryn Gwlad and Friends, Today we introduce to you ~ The Bryn Gwlad Scribal Guild ~ The purpose is to Highlight the guild and its leaders and show what it is all about.
The Bryn Gwlad Scribal Guild
Guild lead is Lady Genevieve of Hellsgate
The Scribal Guild is set up and run by populace from the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, for the Barony and its friends. It is a resource for beginning and continued help and education in Scribal and Illumination in the medieval time frame of the SCA ~ from around 400AD to 1600AD. It is a place to ask and learn about the art as well as receive instruction and support for all. Wether you are a Newcomer or seasoned old timer, there is always information and help for the asking.
I am very excited to be able to interview Lady Genevieveto see how they personally feel about the things they offer and share with the populace.
- How long have you been the lead for this Guild and why did you volunteer for this? A- I’ve currently been the lead for the scribal guild for about 2 1/2 years. I didn’t volunteer to be guild lead, I had just offered to host scribal because I heard that it was needed. And as the host, I was given guild lead.
- What kind of things do you think the Barony can gain from attending/joining this guild? A- Scribal can give an amazing outlet that is very portable. It was pretty easy and cheap to get started and I can bring it to any event while only bringing a small pack of supplies. It’s simple enough to get started, you just have to begin with staying in the lines or practicing handwriting, no stress! The Barony itself then gets unique charters to give out as awards in court. I know I have a few works from friends hanging on display in my house! They’re gorgeous!
- Do you have to have any previous experience to be able to join in and get something from this guild? A- There is absolutely NO experience needed to join in. We start on charters (preprinted scrolls) and calligraphy practice sheets, so there’s no worries about messing up, just start over! We want every charter to be unique and everyone new to the guild provides new insight and creativity that provides that!
- What would you like to say / tell people to encourage them to join in? A- Scribal has honestly been super rewarding. It has been so amazing being able to paint and scribe the awards that are given out to such a talented populace. Seeing someone love your work when it gets presented to them is just lovely, and it is such a needed service to provide just an added hint of beauty to our Dream.
- What do you have planned for the future ? a. 1 month – b. 6 month – c. 1 year –
A- a. 1 month – We’re still working on moving to in-person, please be patient with us. For now, we’re still meeting through discord on the first Thursday of every month at 7pm.
b. 6 month – We’re going to be back to fully in person meetings. Preferably running classes every few meetings or so as well as having scribal tables at events where everyone can try it out!
c. 1 year – Same as the six month plan, We hope to see you there!
6. Anything else you would like to add or say to the populace ?
A- Scribal guild is nothing without the Barony that enriches it. I sent out so many charters to the populace over covid and got so many of them back. I’m so grateful that we can give these works of art back to the Barony to be enjoyed. Thank you all for supporting this guild and may we continue to have such an amazing and kind populace!
Thank you so very much Lady Genevieve ~ Very well said to all the questions, I have totally enjoyed this interview and have learned so much and I hope YOU the Barony and friends see this as exciting as I do – Please Reach out to Genevieve and pick up some Charters and help the Barony stay ready for the awards you all so richly deserve – If You have decided to join in on this fun and learning – please check our the Guild page on the Bryn Gwlad website – As well as their Facebook page, to get involved and see what you can do !
