What Kingdom Phase are we in for martial activities?Red Stop Light (no martial activities)

Last Updated: 9 November 2020
See details on the Bryn Gwlad Reopen Page

In-person activities must adhere to all of the following guidelines

  1. Society-level Guidelines:
  2. Kingdom of Ansteorra has released guidance and a re-open plan for Martial Activities
    • The officers/activities impacted by this are:
      • Knight Marshal (chivalric/heavy combat)
      • Rapier Marshal (rapier/cut & thrust combat)
      • Archery and Thrown Weapons Marshal (archery, thrown weapons)
      • Equestrian Activities (BG doesn’t currently have active equestrian activities regularly, but they can happen if there are marshals/participants who coordinate with the Regional or Kingdom Equestrian officers.)
  3. Kingdom of Ansteorra has NOT released specific guidance for any other SCA activities
  4. Austin/Travis County Rules/Orders, Staging Dashboards, and Overall Stage are available on the ATX website.
  5. Local activities must be on the baronial calendar or published in the newsletter in order to be official.

That means we are allowed to hold in-person gatherings for that activity with appropriate safety precautions and/or restrictions. The different phases of reopening will determine what those precautions, restrictions, and requirements will be.

What types of activities will be considered for reopening?

  • martial activities (rapier, cut & thrust, chivalric combat, archery, thrown weapons, equestrian combat, etc)
  • arts & sciences activities/guild meetings
  • business meetings/revels/happy hours
  • weekend-long/day-long events

On 29 July 2020, the SCA Board of Directors passed a resolution to suspend in-person SCA activity (kingdom-level events, baronials events, etc) until 31 Jan 2020.

This means any/all kingdom or baronial level events must be held virtually.

Kingdom policy has set limitations for travel between groups. Please read the “General” Section of the Ansteorran Martial Reopen Plan for details if you are considering travel to another group.

Decision-Making Tools

  1. If Society hasn’t suspended activities of that type, and
  2. If Kingdom hasn’t suspended activities of that type, and
  3. If Local/State Guidelines allow the activity, and
  4. If Baronial Activities haven’t been suspended by the Seneschal, then
  5. Then there are two ways an activity can happen as an in-person activity
    • A marshal, officer, deputy, or someone who has been deputized as such announces an activity and gets it on the calendar
    • If the above doesn’t happen, then, a group (usually 4 or more) petitions Kingdom to get approval to host that activity

This list is a work in progress and will be updated the week of 2 Nov 2020.

  1. Society can suspend the activity, the type, or all activities.
  2. Kingdom can suspend the activity, the type, or all activities.
  3. Under certain conditions our Seneschal can suspend the activity, the type, or all activities.
  4. The local officer who is in charge of the activity can cancel the activity.

The Bryn Gwlad Reopen plan is based on the Ansteorran Martial Reopen Plan. This plan only applies to Martial Activities and consists of 4 different Phases for a SCA group:

  • Red Light — no in-person martial activities are allowed
  • Phase 1 — Only Target Archery, Thrown Weapons, non-combat Equestrian, and non-contact/combat combat drills are allowed with stringent safety and social distancing measures. No Minor attendance.
  • Phase 2 — All Phase 1 activities as well as combat activities are allowed with stringent safety and social distancing measures. No Minor attendance. No Spectators.
  • Phase 3 — All Phase 1 and Phase 2 activities are allowed with less stringent social distancing and safety measures. Minors attendance/participation is allowed.

Groups are eligible according to Kingdom to advance to a higher stage if at least one of the following criteria is met:

  • 14 day average of total cases is a downward trend
  • 14 day average of positive cases as a percentage of population for the Barony is less than 0.02%
