February ~ Guild of the Month

Greetings Bryn Gwlad and Friends, Today we introduce you to  The Bryn Gwlad Cooks Guild ~ The purpose is to Highlight the guild and its leaders and show what it is all about.

The Bryn Gwlad Cooks Guild lead is Maestri Meadhbh nī Ruaidh óChonnemara

The Cooks Guild is set up and run by populace from the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, for the Barony and its friends.  It is a resource for beginning and continued help in all areas of Cooking and researching historical recipes and styles of recreation cooking,  in the medieval time frame of the SCA ~  pre 1600AD. It is a place to ask questions and receive help or ideas for all.  Wether you are a Newcomer or seasoned old timer, there is always information and help for the asking.

Todays Interview will be with the Guild Principle. Maestri Meadhbh nī Ruaidh óChonnemara and I am very excited to be able to ask a few questions to see how she personally feels about the things she offers and shares with the populace.  Meadhbh Has a great knowledge of working with foods and recipes to create historically accurate foods as well as researching ways to use modern ingredients  where historical ones aren’t available.

So lets Dig In !

  1. Q ~   How long have you been the lead/deputy for this Guild and why  did you volunteer for this?

A ~  I became guild principal last year. I love cooking and wanted to share my love of the art with members of the Barony.  I want to help people explore historic food and not be intimidated cooking it.

2.   Q ~  What kind of things do you think the Barony can gain from  attending/joining this guild?

A ~   I want to show that food from medieval times is delicious, not difficult to cook and not as “weird” as one thinks.  There are so many time periods and/or nationalities to choose from.

3.   Q ~  Do you have to have any previous experience to be able to join in and get something from this guild?

A ~ Absolutely not.  No experience needed. If someone already knows how to cook? Great.  But if anyone doesn’t know how to cook there is still plenty to learn.

4.    Q ~   What would you like to say / tell people to encourage them to join in ?

A ~  Eating is a big part of events. Feasts add to the atmosphere,   Having a table set with food that complements the event adds to making the event magical.  And if you don’t cook at all I can show how to build a menu with ready to eat foods available at the store.

5.    Q ~   What do you have planned for the future ?
     a. 1 month –     b. 6 month c. 1 year  – A lot of this depends on the pandemic.  But, if we have minimal restrictions I’d love to do more work shops: cheese making, bread baking, how to redact recipes,; field trips to some of the ethnic groceries to show where we can get ingredients; and I am sure there could be more.

6.    Q ~  Anything else you would like to add or say to the populace ?

A ~  I just want the Barony to know once the pandemic eases up, for anyone interested in food, history, cooking, etc – all are welcome to come to any activities the guild will have.   I am always available to answer any questions on these topics.  You can find me on Facebook Maddie Teller-Kook (Meadhbh nī Ruaidh óChonnemara)
