Greetings Bryn Gwlad and Friends, Today we introduce you to The Bryn Gwlad Moneyer’s Guild ~ The purpose is to Highlight the guild and its leaders and show what it is all about.
The Bryn Gwlad Moneyer’s Guild
Guild lead is Rüdiger the Moneyer Deputy is Kazimir Liskowicz Wylkowski
The Moneyer’s Guild is set up and run by populace from the Barony of Bryn Gwlad, for the Barony and its friends. It is a resource for beginning and continued help in all areas of Moneying in the medieval time frame of the SCA ~ pre 1600AD. It is a place to ask questions and receive help or ideas for all. Wether you are a Newcomer or seasoned old timer, there is always information and help for the asking.
Todays Interview will be with the Guild Principle Rüdiger the Moneyer, and I am very excited to be able to ask a few questions to see how he personally feels about the things he offers and shares with the populace. Rüdiger Has a great knowledge of working metals to create coins and his knowledge of the history involved is amazing !
~ Greetings, I am Rüdiger, called the Moneyer. I am the guildmaster for the Bryn Gwlad Moneyer’s Guild. Moneying is the art and science of coin production. We make coins the medieval way, with a hammer! Even better, is we will teach you to make them! The guild uses medieval methods and skills to create SCA specific coins, inspired by real historical coinage, fantasy coins, or commemoratives to celebrate wars, events, and special moments. The guild is open to all who share an interest in the workings of medieval and ancient mints, coins, or whoever just likes to swing a hammer. ~
- Q ~ How long have you been the lead/deputy for this Guild and why did you volunteer for this?
A ~ I stepped into the Lead role in September, stepping up from being deputy for the last year or so. I volunteered for it because I definitely want to do everything I can to make moneying a visible art and science in the SCA!
2. Q ~ What kind of things do you think the Barony can gain from attending/joining this guild?
A ~ Lots! Moneying is a great activity to do. The subject matter is interesting, and the work is absolutely worth every second. Moneying is a great stepping stone into a lot of aspects of history, historical art, historical manufacture and economics. The hands-on aspect of an art that translates time is interesting to me – The work we do is the same as the ancient diecutters used for the coinage of the first coins to the coins of the 16th century. That’s a lot of history!
3. Q ~ Do you have to have any previous experience to be able to join in and get something from this guild?
A ~ No experience necessary. The Moneyer’s guild is a teaching guild. We will teach anybody interested the steps you need to start from basics and finish with struck coins. It is accessible – you can do everything sitting, or use magnification if needed. You don’t even have to make coins to have fun with the guild! Naturally, we talk about crusty old coins and the people who made them, so we have some great discussions on history, economics, etc. through the course of working on projects.
4. Q ~ What would you like to say / tell people to encourage them to join in ?
A ~ The number one answer I hear is “I don’t have the skill/time/money” I can’t give you more time, but this guild will do whatever it can to teach you the skills and assist getting the basic starter kit to you. You can always feel free to work with us and we will probably end up paying you with struck coins! Any moneyer in the guild will be glad to answer your questions or let you have a turn at the hammer to strike coins
5. Q ~ What do you have planned for the future ?
a. 1 month – As we get out of Covid and things open back up, our focus is on recruiting and having regular meetings and projects.
b. 6 month – Hopefully, we will have several large projects come down the pipeline, striking coins for our kingdom and others. War pay, commemoratives, and coronation strikes are all already on our docket! c. 1 year – More of the above! We hope to keep projects cycling throughout the year as we get new crowns, new events, new armies to pay…
6. Q ~ Anything else you would like to add or say to the populace ?
A ~ Don’t ever be afraid to approach the guild! Oftentimes, we go to events and WORK to strike these coins. We will be excited to talk to you, just because it looks like we are busy, doesn’t mean we don’t want to talk to you! Most times, I even have a few medieval and ancient coins on me to compare to our projects.
