Heavy fighters in the SCA, also known as chivalric fighters, wear heavy plate armor and face off against each other in one-on-one duels, round-robin bear pits, and large melees. Weapons used by heavy fighters include swords, maces, and axes, both in one-handed and two-handed varieties. Many fighters study a variety of weapons, but the sword and shield combination is most popular and widely used. Weapons are made from rattan or equivalent materials, often reinforced with plastic or tape. Armor is thickly padded to reduce injuries and is made from metal or stiff plastics.
